Losing My Breath in Antarctica
By Adam Longfellow June 23rd, 2009 | 2:31 pm
We can all dream of the glare of snow and ice shining onto our faces. We can dream of the sound of ice cracking like thunder in the distance. We can dream of viewing penguins and other wildlife in their natural habitat, hearing their conversations without crashing the party. A habitat that which you didn't have to buy a ticket and push through a turnstile to get into.
I also know that we can't share a dream without at least one of us being there. There are no souvenir stands out on the ice for me to buy you a postcard. I can't get a penguins autograph for you. I can't buy you a glacier for your backyard garden.
What can I do for you if I go on this journey? I can use all my senses and appreciation for every minute of this life and put them to words. I can put a spark to your imagination and make it burn brighter than the glare of the sun without giving you a headache. I can relive the details with you, from the grandest to the smallest, from a snow burn to a cold breeze.
I've swam with sharks. I've walked on glaciers. I've accidentally fallen down a dry desert waterfall and landed on my back. It's time to take my breath away again.
But this is not about a single post for a contest. It is about a multitude of posts that capture the details, small and large, of an extraordinary journey. I am already a writer, blogger and photographer on a daily basis who can and will bring this journey to life for you. Let me bring you along on this amazing journey aboard the Lyubov Orlova to the Antarctica Peninsula with Quark Expeditions.
