Why Antarctica?

By Kathleen O'Connor   September 12th, 2009 | 1:15 pm

Right now I live in a box. It's small, safe, weather proof, and surrounded by a white picket fence that I'm pretty sure if you touch will shock you so you can never leave. Isn't it funny how we all live in a huge world, but some of us choose to live in these small towns.

This is my life now, boring. I want an adventure! I want something worth writing about, not just the usual "I came home from work and found that the dishes still were not done."

I know this is going to be all "I want, I want, I want," but you have to want something to get it, and I want to see the world starting with Antarctica.

Why Antarctica? Well it is a very special place.

  • It is the only continent with a human population of zero. (Except for the occasional researcher, but they don't permanently live there)
  • Antarctica is the world's 5th largest continent. Many people think it is bigger though because it looks so huge on the bottom of the map but, they just haven't done their research.
  • There is a controversy over whether or not we should drill for oil in Antarctica right now. I believe we shouldn't because (a) We really need to start finding and using other resources and (b) Can't we keep one place on Earth clean and natural?
  • I want to go to Antarctica while there still is a place to go. Who knows if its 6,500 feet deep of ice will melt and release 90% of the world's fresh water supply in my lifetime. If it will I should really start my international journey now because other places will be gone too! Well maybe Mt. Everest will make it.

P.S. Who is the penguins favorite Aunt?

Aunt-Arctica (I love a good bad joke!)
