An Arkie in Antarctica

My dear daughter has gone insane...

Aurora Australis - Photo courtesy of NASA/GeoEye Inc.I can hear my mum now. Why would anyone want to go somewhere where it gets down to -129ºF? I say, why not!   I’ve always been one to enjoy crazy adventures. Even as young as age 6, a cross-country drive to the “Rock Heads” (Mt. Rushmore) was a sweet trip, and I wanted Dad to drive all the way to Antarctica so we could see and play with the penguins.

Once I grew up a bit, my dreams of travel became realities. I started working my way south, first to Mexico, where I spent time learning about Oaxacan traditions from an indigenous man, experienced hurricanes first-hand, and crewed on a sailboat down the Pacific Coast. Most of this was documented by hand and extensively photographed… even a few embarrassing moments, thanks to my brother and his camera! You can check out some of my work here, at The Upward Spiral.

Now I’m headed to Antarctica, the final frozen frontier, where winter means complete darkness and where the Aurora Australis lends its beautiful, eerie glow to the skies. So what do I need to get there? I should definitely bring my camera so I can send photos of the glaciers and the Orcas that live and breed there. Lots of socks, ginger for the trip across the Drake Passage... oh, and someone to take pictures of me getting chased by penguins and swearing I’ll never complain about Portland snowstorms again!

There’s only one more thing I need to do it – that’s your vote! Help me bring this amazing continent and the journey there to the web for everyone to experience, live and uncut.
